Alkali-Activated Metakaolin and Fly Ash as Unfired Ceramic Bonding Systems

Metakaolin (MK) prepared by the calcination of kaolin at 550 °C and fly ash (FA) from combustion black coal in a granulating boiler were used to prepare unfired ceramic bonding systems via alkali activation process. A long-term stability mechanical properties samples similar was observed. The optimal metakaolin ratio, type activator (NaOH or water glass) its concentration evaluated after hydration in: a) laboratory conditions; b) box; c) under hydrothermal activation. Raw materials process characterized XRD, XRF, TG/DTA, FTIR methods. tested using compressive strength test 2, 28 56 days hydration. strengths 16 24 MPa reached for FA activated with glass. MK successful NaOH solution molar above 5 M. values metakaolin, hydrothermally hydrated conditions, 11.2 5.5 MPa, respectively, M NaOH.
